Kendal Industrial Park, Central Java, Indonesia [3 July 2024] – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) accompanied by representatives of the Indonesian Ministry of Finance today (03/07) visited the new rPET recycling factory facility belonging to PT ALBA Tridi Plastics Recycling Indonesia (ATPRI) in Kendal, Central Java. This visit to the facility, which was built on 2.6 hectares of land, shows positive support for efforts to realize the target of reducing plastic pollution and advancing a circular economy as well as supporting Indonesia’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon by 2060.

Yi Guo, Director of ALBA Group Asia, and Dian Kurniawati, Director of PT ALBA Tridi Plastics Recycling Indonesia, were proud to lead the visit of the future facility capable of sustainably recycling up to 48,000 tons of waste PET bottles annually. Made Arya Wijaya, ADB Executive Director for Indonesia, Renadi Budiman, ADB Deputy Country Director for Indonesia, and the representatives of the Ministry of Finance were pleased to witness the progress.

This circular economy factory investment is in line with the government’s agenda in the field of equitable distribution of investment as well as concrete evidence of support for the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045. Green investments in Indonesia have increased in recent years and contribute to the achievement of a Golden Indonesia 2045. According to reports from Bain & Company, one of the world’s leading management and business consultancies, green investment flows to Indonesia in 2023 were projected to reach US$1.6 billion, up 28% compared to the previous year. In the recent years, Indonesia has made significant progress in the field of plastic recycling but increased investment and supportive policies are still needed. Further cooperation can encourage the development of the circular economy in Indonesia with the comprehensive support of the government  for industry players towards the simplification of licensing processes, legal certainty, and attractive financial and fiscal incentives.

The US$60 million flagship investment by PT ALBA Tridi Plastics Recycling Indonesia emphasizes the company’s commitment to advancing the circular economy of Indonesia and ALBA Group Asia’s vision of a world without waste. By adopting a partnership model that focuses on micro, small and medium enterprises, the company aims at increasing collection rate in Indonesia, fostering environmental awareness, and promoting community involvement that will have a long-lasting impact. Sustainable business models contribute to long-term economic growth, including the creation of local employment opportunities and the stimulation of the regional economy in Kendal and in the region of Central Java.

Renadi Budiman, ADB Deputy Country Director for Indonesia, commented, “ADB has always emphasized that real progress in the fight against climate change requires concrete actions in addition to policy discussions with various stakeholders. This investment can be a concrete step and in June 2023 ADB and Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund (LEAP) provided a certified blue loan to ALBA Tridi Plastics Recycling Indonesia  where this loan complies with ADB’s Ocean Finance Framework and investment criteria set based on the Action Plan for Healthy Oceans and Sustainable Blue Economies.”

“Company efforts to support the recycling process and waste management are very important to encourage sustainable economic growth in Indonesia. This investment provides a benchmark that can be emulated by the rest of the business world and makes a significant contribution to the goal of reducing carbon emissions and increasing environmental sustainability”, added Renadi.

Yi Guo, Director of ALBA Group Asia, commented “We are very proud to bring our expertise and commitment to help the country reduce the impact of plastic waste. We believe that the socio-economic impact will be beneficial for the local community. With the technological know-how, operational excellence, global sales and marketing capabilities of ALBA Group Asia, we are confident that this new circular economy rPET facility will provide long-term positive impact in environmental sustainability in Indonesia including the creation of new green jobs.”

Dian Kurniawati, Director of PT ALBA Tridi Plastics Recycling Indonesia,  added, “We need to work together to find the best solution to the plastic pollution problem in Indonesia. Investing in these new facilities is our way of paving the way for realizing the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045, by improving the environment and local communities. We hope this can have a significant impact on a national scale.”
